06/29/23: The last two Saturdays were spent installing the new Critterfence at the 8th & Gilmer garden site. Last Saturday was spent laying out the fence, driving the ground sleeves, inserting the fence posts and tensioning lines, and hanging the two gates. This Saturday we completed installing the fence posts and tensioning, installed a chew barrier around the bottom and then hanging and attaching the 7.5’ fence around the perimeter. Kudos to all the volunteers who helped make this happen, especially given the extreme heat on both days, and to LEAP who provide some expertise, as well as left over supplies from another fence installation and the loan of tools for the installation – all greatly appreciated!
In addition to the fence installation, volunteers planted sweet potato slips this week, that joined the sweet corn, carrots, butternut squash and spaghetti squash planted earlier this month for our inaugural crop of vegetables in this garden. The fence is just in time to stop the grazing of our young emerging seedlings that has already taken place by our local population of deer.
