At the end of August, we regrettably said farewell to Miranda Poe, our Urban Agriculture Trainee since March 2025, due to loss of federal grant funds. She is now working as a Market Operator with LEAP and at Lick Run Farm’s new Crop Shop. We are most appreciative of the work she performed for us and for the warm presence she gave to our gardens’ food pantry partners, neighbors and guests. On July 30th, the Carver Garden hosted a group of 43 campers from the Eureka Parks Summer Program to tour the Carver Garden and orchard, to learn about healthy eating, and to taste some of the seasonal produce. 03/15/26: Last Saturday, we began planting some of the cooler weather crops by direct seeding at both the Carver Garden and at the garden at 8th & Gilmer. These included carrots, beets, mustard, spinach, radishes, turnips, and Swiss chard. 02/11/26: Some of our One Valley gardeners started dreaming of the upcoming growing season by meeting at the Brambleton Center’s VCE Extension Office to plant our first cold-weather seeds in growing trays. Dana Acimovic, the new VCE Extension Specialist and Apurva, one of the VCE interns, helped us mix up the soil medium mixture, fill the trays, plant the seeds, and install them on the light table.
