03/04/23: The balmy, windy morning of March 4th was the beginning of our planting season at the Carver Garden this year. We were gifted with some extra early season vegetable seedlings that were ready for transplanting. We tacked down the landscape fabric that had blown loose over the winter and then planted head cabbage and napa cabbage into the fabric covered areas that grew sweet potatoes last fall. Leaf lettuce and some micro-greens were planted in raised beds, with an additional flat of kale plants ready to go. Volunteers also weeded and prepared an area to transplant and spread out some carrots that had been crowded in a raised bed from last fall. We’re off to a running start!
Later that afternoon, Shawn Jadrnicek, one of our local VCE extension agents, conducted a very informative Pruning Workshop at the garden that included demonstrations of heading and thinning cuts and how to train your fruit trees by selecting 4 primary scaffold branches and spreading them at the proper angle. He also demonstrated removing old growth and other pruning techniques and training for a variety of berry types.
A great big thank you to everyone who made it a wonderful day working in The Carver Garden # 1
