Rev. Carter and Gene helped Shawn repot some of the peppers and tomatoes that Shawn had grown from seed in the William Fleming greenhouse.
On Saturday, April 13th, Gene led the first of our Garden Seminars on composting, and had a small, but appreciative class in attendance.
A second low tunnel was erected for some more of the earlier plantings. The fall cover crop that we had planted in the fall grew nicely, and mostly weed-free, on those portions of 8th & Gilmer that were not covered with landscape fabric.
Last week, Shawn mowed the legume cover crop of rye and clover that was on the pathways and on the west side of the plot. The remainder of the cover crop was crimped by Shawn and Gene using a t-post and ropes to step on the vegetation every 6 inches or so to kill the vegetation, in preparation for planting other crops in the decayed vegetation.
On Saturday, May 4th, we removed the low tunnels and harvested our first vegetables of the season. The harvest included kale, collards, bok choi, turnip greens, oak leaf and a second type of loose-leaf lettuce, and some radishes.
