All kinds of greens are in full production and summer squash are starting to bloom.

Volunteers harvest vegetables for neighbors and themselves, although the vast majority is given away to local food pantries. Currently, we deliver weekly produce to the Hope Center, Lion’s Share at St. Mark’s Lutheran, McCray Court Senior Center, and RAM House. Beginning this month, we are adding two additional recipients – Hunt Manor Apartments and Hill Street Baptist Church. Our intent is to teach volunteers from these various entities how to harvest vegetables at the gardens, to become partners with us, and then to be responsible for the delivery back to their pantries. We’d love to have you come join us, either to volunteer or to share our bounty. The Carver Garden is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am until noon; the garden at 8th & Gilmer is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, also from 9:00 am until noon, all weather permitting.

The prickly pears in the fence bordering the Carver Garden continue to grow and recently started blooming.

Rev. Carter and Miranda have helped to create a mini-garden at the Villa Heights Community Center, in conjunction with the kids from Shining Stars Montessori day care center.

Our next community farm and garden tour will be held next week, in coordination with DARS and VCE. Part of the activities that day will be building scarecrows for the gardens from recycled materials. Jane Gabrielle gave us an early preview of what they might look like. Come check them out!

And, please come join us in cleaning up the neighborhood at our next quarterly Adopt-A-Street Cleanup on Saturday, June 21st. We will start at 9:00 am at the Carver Garden (525 Loudon Ave. NW). We hope to see you then!
