On Saturday, June 1st, One Valley sponsored a Garden-to-Go event at the Carver Garden in cooperation with Virginia Cooperative Extension. SNAP-eligible youth and families were assisted in planting a grow bag with a tomato plant along with a companion flower that they took home with them to grow their own tomatoes.
Both gardens have been very productive this spring. The 8th and Gilmer garden has produced over 200 pounds of produce in June alone, so far. Produce includes beets, turnips, yellow squash, radishes, kale, collards, Italian peppers, and red leaf lettuce, among others.
On Saturday, June 22, Connie Crawford and Pat Hill presented their Garden Seminar on canning and preserving food, which was appreciated by all attendees.
At the same time, a number of volunteers from Loudon Avenue Christian Church (LACC) spent their Day of Service spreading mulch at the Carver Garden and cleaning the alley alongside the 8th and Gilmer Garden. We greatly appreciate the assistance of our neighborhood partners.
