11/05/22: The garden was decorated for its End-of-Season Celebration and tents setup with tasting samples of sweet potato chili, sweet potato pie, hot apple cider, chow-chow, dried apples, and sweet potato smoothies. The weather cleared up and cooperated for a rain-free event.
Carver Garden volunteers and supporters sample the various offerings and enjoy fellowship with each other at the event. Participants were also treated to a group exercise to encourage healthy lifestyles, in addition to healthy eating.
Near the end of the event, this photo was taken that included many, but not all, of the folks who stopped by for the celebration. Thanks to all who made this a most enjoyable event!
10/22/22: After cutting off the sweet potato vines at ground level, removing the drip irrigation tape, and pulling back the landscape fabric, volunteers started digging up the sweet potato tubers. Our initial harvest of sweet potatoes was disappointing, but a learning experience. We’ll make improvements for next year.
Then began the process of putting parts of the garden to bed for the winter. Here, we have just cleared out all of the tomato plants, leaving a clear surface for planting next season.
10/08/22: Today, we started initial pruning work at a second garden site on 8th and Gilmer. Excessive brush and dead trees will be removed and the plot leveled in preparation for planting next season.
09/10/22: Amazetta helped students from the Envision Center plant extra lettuces and napa cabbage that they didn’t have room for at their community garden plot. These plants took off amazingly well for this late in the year.
A great big thank you to each and everyone. It has been a grand year of our Ten years. You are so appreciated. May we continue to provide and share knowledge to insure our eating smart and moving more togrther
